Detained: An Israeli soldier put a Palestinian boy in
a headlock
A young boy, wide-eyed with fear, casts a terrified
glance at an Israeli soldier's assault rifle as he is pinned to the ground.
These startling images show the tension and fear that
is an everyday reality for people caught up in the violence of the West Bank.
The pictures show the boy - whose arm is in a sling -
wrestling with the soldier during clashes between Israeli security forces and
Palestinian protesters earlier today.
Fear: The boy is visibly terrified as he is held by
the Israeli soldier
Desperation: The soldier was attacked as the boy's
loved ones desperately tried to rescue him
Bite: The girl sinks her teeth into the man's right
hand
The pictures show the boy - whose arm is in a sling -
wrestling with the soldier during clashes between Israeli security forces and
Palestinian protesters earlier today.
The mask-wearing trooper was set upon by Palestinian
protestors - including children and old women - desperate to free the
frightened and injured boy.
At one point the soldier raises his fist as if to
strike the woman standing before him.
His mask is torn away and his rifle falls to his side
as he is set upon by the group.
A little girl sinks her teeth into his right hand,
before he shoves her away as he holds onto the boy.
Shove: The soldier shoves the little girl away after
the bite
Fist: The soldier raises his hand to the women
The outcome of this raw and upsetting incident is not
known, but a fellow IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) soldier is seen coming to his
comrade's aid.
The pictures were taken following a march against Palestinian
land confiscation to expand the nearby Jewish Hallamish settlement on August
28, 2015 in the West Bank.
Tensions in the region are high after Israel
yesterday launched an air strike against a Hamas facility in response to a
rocket fired from the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army said.
No one was hurt in the night-time rocket attack on
southern Israel, the army said in a statement.
Tension: The boy is cradled by a girl as Palestinian
women fight to free him
Aid: Another Israeli soldier comes to help his
comrade
There were no immediate reports of any casualties in
the Palestinian enclave after warplanes struck what the Israeli military said
was a weapons factory belonging to the ruling Hamas Islamist movement.
Salafi jihadist groups that support al Qaeda's calls
for a global holy war have claimed most of the sporadic rocket strikes on
Israel from the Gaza Strip since the end of a 50-day war a year ago.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for
Thursday's rocket, which exploded in an open area adjacent to the Gaza border,
but Israel has said it holds Hamas accountable for any attacks from the enclave
of 1.8 million Palestinians.
According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry website, 11
rockets from the Gaza Strip, excluding the one launched on Thursday, have
struck Israel since the Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that halted the Gaza war.
